Marina di Modica

The seaside frazione of Modica looks modern, but actually has a far-reaching ancient history underlying it. Located 17 kilometers from the beautiful baroque city on the hill, Marina di Modica dates back to the 3rd century BC, as evidenced by archeological findings, in particular, necropoli that were excavated here. It came under the domain of the Arabs (like most of Sicily) for centuries, then called Gadir ar Sarsur. The coast was largely abandoned in the Middle Ages and into the 16th century because of pirate raids. The area that is now Marina di Modica was likewise used mainly for commercial port and fishing, until the 1960s when beach resorts became popular.
With a year-round population of about 800 people, it swells in the warmer months -from May through October- with those seeking sea and sun. It has the Blue Flag status for its clean water and attractive beaches. What's more, Marina di Modica is well-known for its scenery that features in several episodes of the Montalbano mystery series.
It sits between Punta Pisciotta and Punta Regilione. Around town, there are cafes, bars, restaurants and services; the closest larger town is Pozzallo, six kilometers away.
The heart is Piazza Mediterraneo, found right above the golden-sand beaches and backed by palm trees. A long paved promenade along the seafront reaches off the piazza. Facing a bay with long expanses of caramel-colored sand, it is best known for its beaches and water sports.Kite surfing, sailboarding, and other pursuits can be enjoyed here. There are free beaches (bring your own umbrella and blanket) as well as concessions (called lidos) that rent umbrellas and sunbeds) and usually have other services like snack bars, changing cabins, playgrounds for kids, restrooms, showers and often restaurants.
