In the thriving heart of La Spezia is the Civic Art Museum that holds a star-studded collection of art covering several centuries. There are about 1000 works in all, from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, encompassing sculptures, ceramics, bronze, and glassware. But the most extensive part of the collection centers on the paintings. There are heavy hitters like Titian, Tintoretto, Sebastiano, Bellini, Raphael and Canaletto to enthrall visitors, but many other "minor" artists of great talent adorn the walls, as well.

There is a room called the "Chamber of Marvels" with unusual items and naturalia. The cloister garden is also a highlight, with botanical species planted here that are found in the artwork hanging in the museum. A gurgling fountain completes the quiet scene here. A bookshop and gift store are also part of the offerings.

The collection was amassed by a La Spezia resident named Amedeo Lia, whose name is on the museum.

The Museo Civico d'Arte is open from 10:00 AM til 6:00 PM daily; closed Mondays.
