The hallowed halls of the Antico Caffe Greco have been serving coffee and libations near the Spanish Steps since 1760. It is the oldest cafe in Rome, and the second oldest in Italy, after Caffe Florian in Venice. The distinguished rooms bear artworks and statues, letters and dedications from artists and intellectuals through the eras of the caffe's history. It was frequented by some of the world's best known figures of art and literature - Hans Christian Anderson, James Joyce, Lord Byron, Orson Wells, Mark Twain and Gabriele D'Annunzio, along with artists like Antonio Canova, De Chirico, Mariano Fortuny, and many others too numerous to list. The great thing about Caffe Greco, though, is the mixing of all walks of life and all nationalities that imbibe in the historic atmosphere together.

This is the kind of place you want to linger, to soak in the artwork, the original furnishings, the sense of history and the sense of Roman identity that this long-running cafe exudes. Enjoy a coffee or tea, or cocktail, along with pastries or gelato, while sitting for a while, writing your postcards or in your journal, or just gazing at the art. It is a Roman experience!
