Agello

A pleasant hamlet of warm stone and stucco houses on a dominating hill above Lake Trasimeno, you'll find quiet and characteristic charm here. Set a 411 meters (1,200 feet) above sea level, it looks at Lake Trasimeno on one side and sweeps over views of the plains and hills dotted with vines and olive groves on the other. Piazza Agilla offers panoramic views, and from here the village branches off in two areas that almost make it feel like two hamlets put together into one.
Its historic claim to fame is that during the Second Punic War, Hannibal battled the Romans here -the Carthaginian forces ambushed the Romans in the Battle of Lake Trasimeno. Later, in the 1100s, the territory fell under the control of noble lords as a grand feudal estate. The castle, the remains of which can be seen and its tower is a symbol of the town, still stand to give a sort of skyline to the place.
It is a frazione of Magione, but is in easy reach of Perugia, the lake (of course), Panicale, Umbertide, Assisi, Spello, Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona, Arezzo...well, MANY desirable and beautiful locations to visit! Around town, the ambiance is typically Umbrian country town, with stone buildings and charm, views and quiet rhythms. Nearby, a visit to the Castello di Solomeo winery would be a good idea as it is a beautiful restoration, lovingly done by designer Bruno Cucinelli (who also restored the hamlet of Solomeo to create a fabulous workshop and community gathering space with a theater and more. An ambition project and vision that he brought to reality.
