The defining natural landmark on the Sorrentine peninsula is the towering Mount Faito that rises behind Vico Equense. Ascend to a different climate at the high elevation (it reaches 1,400 meters above sea level), with thick forests of faggi (beech), some of trees are more than 400 years old. There is a natural wonderland of woods, mountains, canyons and views that sweep across the entire Gulf of Naples, along the whole Sorrentine Peninsula, and out to Capri. In a word: Spectacular!

There are plenty of hiking paths, some parks for kids, and some restaurants scattered around the mountain hamlets. You can drive into the mountains from Vico Equense, or take the cable car up to Mt Faito from Castellamare di Stabia. It leaves from the train station in Piazza Unita' d'Italia.
