Roughly the same size and shape of Capri's uber-famous Piazzetta, this one in Maratea is a bit more laid back and is officially called Piazza Buraglia, though everone refers to it as "la piazzetta". Instead of the maiolica-tiled clock tower that Capri's has, Maratea's is overlooked by the 16th century bell tower of the church of the Annunziata. Closed in by shops, cafes, and boutiques, there are tables around the piazzetta to sit and enjoy a drink or a gelato while soaking in the ambiance.

Walk down Via San Pietro to view the church, then continue on the short distance to Piazza Biagio Vitolo, home to the town hall and the fanciful Nymph fountain, a symbol of the city (is called the fontana della sirena.) Meander the side streets, up and down the stepped lanes, and see the charms of this town suspended above the sea. A walk down Corso Garibaldi takes you to a panoramic overlook where you can see the mountains surrounding Maratea and the shimmering cobalt sea below. (It is also a parking lot, in case you need one.) Fragrant macchia brush and blooming flowers scent the air.

There are restaurants around but the hub of life is, of course, the piazzetta. So sit, sip, and watch the people parade.
