The Augustinian order known as the Brothers of the Hermits built this church in 1276. It was destined to become an important spiritual and cultural center in the city of Padua, located in the Veneto region. The Romanesque church sustained heavy bombing during World War II, but some lovely fresco fragments by Mantegna remain in the Cappella Ovetani.. There is an unusual terra cotta altar.

The annexed cloistered monastery now houses the civic museum with archeological displays and priceless paintings by northern artists like Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Giotto and Bellini. There are rare Roman coins, medallions and mosaics, as well. It is a must see if you're in Padova!
