Castello di Bracciano

At the top of town, the castle has been a dominating presence since 1470. Officially called the Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, many simply refer to it as the "castle of Bracciano." Either way, it has a long history, first as a fortress and strategic outpost, and then as a proper palace. The beautiful setting overlooking both the town and the lake has been the setting for many high-profile events and weddings - notably, Tom Cruise, Isabella Rossellini, Michelle Hunziger, and many other noted Italians. The place is the perfect setting for a special event of any kind.
The castle was built as a stronghold but in the mid to late-1500s during the Renaissance when Bracciano was an actual Ducato (duchy) it saw many renovations with the addition of loggias, arches, gardens and sumptuous suites (or apartments) as living quarters, frescoes and more. It was turned into a lavish palace, which it still is. Originally owned by the Orsini family, a powerful one during the Middle Ages in the Rome area, at the end of the 1600s that family line ended, and the castle was purchased by Livio Odescalchi. That family still owns the castello, and it is open as a museum, as well as being available for events.
The museum features many beautiful spaces. Besides the captivating courtyard and towers, the salons with tapestries, artwork, furnishings, frescoes and intriguing architectural features, the tour also showcases the castle's functionary spaces, like the armory, the private quarters, and the chapel of Santo Stefano. Many frescoes are on view, but especially delightful are the halls frescoed with female figures; there are several, but in particular the appropriately named Sala delle Donne (Salon of the Women) is a must-see.
Naturally, its position gives you fabulous views over the lake, the town and the countryside. Take a tour and appreciate the history and beautiful of this historic castle.
