A town with a dual identity, San Nicola Arcella has the ancient hill town borgo and the seaside fishing village, now a modern resort town. The town's founding was tied to Scalea and ancient Lavinium, the Roman settlement after the original Greek village of Lao was destroyed. It was renamed San Nicola and the watch tower was built for defense. The town moved uphill following Saracen raids. Supposedly the Arcella part was tacked on to the name, meaning "on the rock". The town's history is recounted in painted fresco scenes on the walls of the old town, from the Magna Grecia period onward.

Down at the sea was the fishing village, now a popular summer destination and a beautiful one, at that. The natural arch, called Arco Magno, and the rocks poking out of the water make a picturesque place to sun and swim. Sandy beaches, clear water and plenty of activity all make for a great holiday.

A few highlights:
Torre Crawford. The coastal watch tower is so-named now after the writer Francis Marion Crawford, who once owned it. The tower sits on a rocky point with spectacular views, and hikes with visits to the tower are organized by the Pro Loco organization.

Isola Dino. The rock island off the coast is called Dino, and you can swim, or rent a boat or kayak. On the island is a Grotta Azzurra, or blue grotto, like the uber-famous one on Capri (but less crowded!).

Arco Magno. The gorgeous natural arch is one of the big attractions, and rightfully so. It is reached by a path and steps, about 15 minutes walk, or by boat. The beach is made of pebbles, hidden behind the massive stone arch. You can swim among the rocks and under the arch. Really unusual and highly recommended!

Other activities in the area including boating, parasailing, paragliding, ATV off-road excursions, biking, horse riding, and more.
