A sweet stop on a tour of Modica is the Chocolate Museum, to learn about the city's unusual tradition. Modica has been a center of chocolatiers and specialized chocolate production for centuries. The tradition of "cold working" the cocoa beans and paste is very similar to the Aztec and in fact derives from that ancient culture, brought to modica during the Spanish rule of Sicily. The Spanish had taken it back to Spain from their colonies in Mexico and Guatamala, and it slowly was transmitted to the Kingdom of Sicily, under their dominion.

The museum is a good place to start, to get an overview of the history and production method.Located in the Palazzo della Cultura, the short visit will help you appreciate the flavors of the fine confections found in the city's many cioccolaterie (chocolate shops). Besides the explanatory displays, there are chocolate sculptures to admire, as well.

The Modica Chocolate Museum is open from 10:00 AM til 2:00 PM and from 4:00 PM til 8:00 PM most days. Open Sunday from 10:00 AM til 2:00 PM. Closed Monday.
