The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in central Milan is considered to be one of Europe's first covered shopping arcades. The groundbreaking design of iron and glass inspired other architects around the world to build glass-capped city shopping venues. Giuseppe Mengoni was the Milanese architect who started the project in 1865 at the behest of King Emanuele himself. He used iron beams and loads of glass, including an octagonal cupola at its center as a nod to new urban industrial design but blended it with neoclassical elements. Inaugurated in 1877, it was considered eclectic and yet beautiful, and was an instant hit, both in Milan and abroad.

Step into the marbled-paved space and feel the ambiance of grandeur. Sunlight filters in from the glass panels above, and the central floor below the cupola is covered with a mosaic of the crest of the House of Savoy. The galleria holds offices on the upper floors, and is filled with prestigious stores, designer duds, trendy cafes, and a luxury hotel. Stroll through to shop or have lunch.

The Galleria in Milan connects the Piazza Duomo with Piazza della Scala. You can't miss it, and shouldn't miss the chance to enjoy this beautiful space and the famous brands housed inside.
