Santa Maria dell'Olmo

The main church in Castelmezzano is easy to find, right on the main piazza with the stunning views of the surrounding town and mountain peaks. The church is named for an elm tree that used to stand here. This was established as a Norman town, and was also an important post for the Templar Knights, and the church bears some symbols of that era.

Built in the 13th century, the rather plain but attractive Romanesque facade bears four pilasters, a clock, and a lengthy cornice bearing flowers, lions, eagles and two bull heads. A painting of San Rocco was added, who became the town's patron saint in 1769. Step inside and enjoy the artwork and the Templar curiosities you should be able to spot.

In the summer, you're more likely to spot the festivities of weddings taking place, as it is very popular for that, and the piazza fills with well-dressed guests and of course, the bridal party.
