Porto di Maratea

The area known as Porto di Maratea is, of course, the actual boat marina (porto turistico) but also a hopping hamlet with some great restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Not to be confused with the area called Marina di Maratea (which actually has no boat marina, but holds some coveted seafront as well as the train station), the Porto is a pretty area with a small church, some year-round residents, pleasure and fishing boats, and some of the best restaurants in town are found down here. There are is a type of piazzetta with some lovely cafes, perfect for cappuccino and breakfast, a drink, an evening aperitivo at sunset, or a cold gelato. There are a few shops here - both useful (like a food store), some souvenirs, jewelry and pottery, marine supplies, and lovely levels of stair-stepped streets leading to homes and up to the church and eventually the main road.
The arch surrounding the boat marina has several excellent eateries, and it is here that you will find boat and kayak rentals, boat excursion trips, and a small piece of beach over at the far end.
