On a hilltop below Campiglia Marittima, the rustic Romanesque church Pieve San Giovanni is the oldest in the area. It is a simple stone block church with a single nave, apse and transcept and is very spare inside. But externally, it is a significant structure for its architecture that dates to 1173 and for the intriguing carvings you'll find on its facade. There is also an historic monumental cemetery attached.

The Pieve di San Giovanni is also notable for its beautiful position and breathtaking views, especially evocative at sunset.
