We especially liked the "sense of place" Villino Mariella gave us

July 2023 - My husband, myself and our just graduated college daughter spent a week at Villino Mariella and we absolutely loved our stay. Initially we were disappointed that we missed out on a "Summer In Italy" Positano property, but in the end, we much preferred being in Praiano. With Villino Mariella's old world charm, we had all the comforts of home, including strong ACs that saved us during the mid-July heat wave and two amazing, spacious terraces of a view you can never tire of. We took full advantage of the washing machine and as far as the kitchen, we mostly enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, coffee from Bar del Sole ;) and then sitting out later at night. We slept well, Wi-Fi signal was strong and showers hot.

We especially liked the "sense of place" Villino Mariella gave us, being in the terraced neighborhood just below the church. It was easy, walk-able access to everything we needed including grocery, ATM, a convenient bus stop to all points on the Amalfi Coast, and even with all the steps, the beach (with Mirante Cafe on the way) was super pleasant. The villa is also within walking distance of many wonderful restaurants and if in Marina di Praia Beach, a bus ride there (check the schedule) and a taxi back which either the restaurant or the one parking lot attendant called for.

The vibe in Praiano isn't overwhelmingly touristy, which we particularly welcomed after long days sightseeing. People were friendly and number one, from the moment we met her, was our property manager, Tina. She was eager to showcase the villa, but also to share helpful information about Praiano and exploring the coast. With any questions, she responded almost instantaneously! Even with all your trip planning, suggestions from a relative local is invaluable. We'd highly recommend Villino Mariella, would surely return one day and were sorry to leave.

Finding our accommodations through "Summer In Italy" was the best start to our vacation. You are so much more than a property management company. Always professional, you are more like a self help travel agency and at the same time, we felt well taken care of. By simply offering a 24/7 phone number for assistance says a lot about who you are. From phone conversations to emails, you listened and were consistently understanding, patient and thoughtful in response. Communications were clear and thorough, and we enjoyed the newsletters. Special shout out to Klint! And as I mentioned above, the information to be found on the website is invaluable and we appreciate the work it takes to keep it up to date. We thank you all for your kind efforts in making our vacation this summer such a memorable one ~ It was what we hoped for and then it was more ~

Travel tips

  • My best advice is to read the "Summer In Italy" website and click on every link, there's a wealth of information to be had :)
  • In Praiano, we enjoyed Hosteria Il Pino, Kasai Restaurant, and Restaurant Il Pirata and Restaurant Da Armandino in Marina di Praia. In each the food was delicious, but they have different atmospheres and while all wonderful, it was a distinctive experience in each one.
  • We took day trips to Ravello, Amalfi, Capri, Positano and as wine enthusiasts, to the vineyard of Marisa Cuomo in Furore.
  • In Ravello, we saw a fantastic Mozart concert as part of the Ravello Concert Festival and would recommend Restaurant Salvatore or Mimi Pizzeria. We highly recommend Villa Cimbrone and having a lemon granita in their terraced garden. This was one of our favorite days. You felt like you were in a postcard sitting in Piazza Duomo.
  • In Amalfi, we had a great tour of the church and Paper Museum, and loved our late lunch at Restaurant Lo Smeraldino. Because of the heat, we regret missing Atrani which is a short walk from Amalfi and also hiking the "Walk of the Gods" from Praiano to Positano. As one of our drivers said, given the temperature and no shade "you'd have to start the hike at 3 am."
  • As recommended on the "Summer In Italy" website, we had a wonderful day trip with Praia Sea Service La Sibilla to Capri and was very conveniently picked up and dropped off at Gavitella Beach, make sure you ask.
  • We spent one afternoon in Positano walking around just enough and then luckily having lunch and swimming at Restaurant Da Adolfo in Laurito Beach because another party didn't show up. We had unsuccessfully tried getting reservations weeks before, but it seems you need to book months ahead of the high season. The restaurant has a boat that picks you up and takes you back to Positano landing. Super fun.
  • We had planned another full day in Positano, but the hordes of tourists and heat kept us away and instead we leisurely enjoyed the Praiano beach. There is One Fire Beach, orange umbrellas, and then blue and white umbrellas, partner to La Gavitella Restaurant. We much preferred the blue and white umbrellas, which didn't have crazy loud music and boatloads coming from Positano to party. Plus your fee for the umbrella and lounge chair included a credit towards lunch at La Gavitella Restaurant on the beach, which was amazing. Our chairs were also closer to where the locals seemed to hang out and swim, and that just added to our "sense of place."
  • We did take the SITA bus to Positano and Amalfi, but took car service to Ravello and the vineyard in Furore. Tina [the property manager] will explain there is also a Praiano-Positano bus and a Praiano only bus. We used Amalfi Coast Transfers and Amalfi Coast Private Car Service, make sure you book the car service well in advance (get at least 2-3 quotes because they vary greatly), they prefer cash and tip the driver. The buses are considerably less expensive, but given traffic and tourists crowds, their schedule isn't very dependable.
  • To mention, we used Amalfi Coast Transfers, owned by Mena, the day we arrived in Naples. With her we arranged for a driver to meet us at the airport, who took us to meet a guide in Naples. With our luggage secure with the driver, we did an excellent 3 hour guided tour of Naples, had pizza and then stopped at the Excavations of Herculaneum before arriving in Praiano around 6:30-7 (8 hour day for the driver). It wasn't inexpensive, but totally worth every euro. Mena's drivers, as well as Amalfi Coast Private Car Service, were all friendly, professional, somehow always punctual and eager to share highlights of the coast. You really do not want to be driving these roads and spending a good portion of your vacation dealing with parking. Transportation was easily one of our biggest expenses.

The location is amazing as is the villa

June 2023 - We stayed in Villino Mariella for 10 days and it far exceeded our expectations! The location cannot be beat! Central to everything in Praiano and all of the Amalfi Coast.

The accommodations were perfect! The villa and its furnishings were spacious and comfortable. It was wonderful having 2 very spacious verandas with wonderful outdoor space. The views of the bay, Positano, the hillsides and even Capri were stunningly breathtaking sunrise to sunset!

The villa is centrally located in a quiet pedestrian area easily accessed from the main road. There are several wonderful local restaurants, a few cafes, a well stocked market, a small pharmacy and several ceramic and other gift shops all within walking distance of the villa. There are two beaches, each distinctively different and bath truly wonderful. We cannot wait to come back.

You all were wonderful to work with. Very helpful and responsive. Extra shout out to Klint and Anita who bore the brunt of my emails. Thank you! I will be returning to Praiano in a couple months time and will be happy to work with Summer In Italy again. Thank you!

Travel tips

  • Praiano is a wonderful small quiet town centrally located on the Amalfi Coast. It’s very easy to get to other towns in the region. Ravello, Amalfi, and Positano are closest. They are each beautiful and wonderful in their own way. Sorrento is a short distance and has many unique and different things to do and see.
  • Hire a private boat and enjoy a day going to Capri and/or Ischia - with stops for swimming and shopping.
  • There are lots of great tours and experiences: cooking, pulling mozzarella, olive oil tastings, making limoncello, and so much more!
  • Parking in Praiano is nearly impossible. Avoid a car rental if you can. Moped is a great alternative option, but go slow at first - it’s a lot trickier than it looks. Private car service or public transportation work best. There are two SITA bus stops in town. Very inexpensive.
  • We loved our daily morning visits to Bar del Sole for coffee and they have a great pre and post dinner drink menu, too.
  • Another favorite was Mirante Cafe - on the pathway toward One Fire Beach. Mirante Cafe is small and has a very relaxed, comfortable vibe with great views, music and drinks.
  • We enjoyed several relaxed and delicious dinners at Trattoria San Gennaro. We loved the vibe at Restaurant Il Pirata - so cool how it’s built into the mountainside on the beach, and so many other wonderful, local restaurants.

Wonderful property with unencumbered views of the sea and Positano

May 2023 - This is a wonderful property with unencumbered views of the sea and neighboring Positano. The location in Praiano is ideal being only steps from the bus stop, wonderful family restaurants, a beach and local market.

Shared with our two adult children and the accommodations were ideal with bedrooms on one floor and living space on another so those who like to sleep in are not disturbed by those who are early risers.

Loved the location, great villa to quickly get away from the crowds

October 2022 - I love the location in Praiano. There were nights that we saw nobody else from our veranda and occasionally the next guests in the villas next door. It’s a great villa to quickly get away from the crowds, as is Praiano in general and it’s so close to the best Praiano has to offer.

The kitchen was ample and everything in the villa worked properly. It was very clean and the veranda was not only extremely large, there was also shade at most any part of the day. The veranda below offered more privacy and additional shade. (This is one of the reasons we picked this villa as we have learned with this westerly view it can get very hot in the afternoons. This is coming from someone who resides in Florida.)

Everything was wonderful.

While I normally like to deal directly with owners for the best service, Summer In Italy was the best management company to deal with in every aspect of the pre stay right through the entire 5 weeks we were there. I’d say better than any owner could have been.

Travel tips

  • This is my 6th time on the Amalfi Coast in the last 9 years. There’s so much to tell about this wonderful area. It has become quite crowded as the Internet and the advent of Airbnb types sites as made more accessible to the world. Praiano is by far the best place to stay and the least crowded.
  • We recommend to rent a scooter or pay for other type of transport.
  • There is a taxi cab stand at the top of the stairs and Rosario and Gennaro are almost always there to help.
  • While I’ve never ridden in one, there are plenty of buses running through town, by far the cheapest and less luxurious modes of travel.
  • Check out Restaurant La Strada for the best food in Praiano. Also convenient and the friendliest relaxed service is Trattoria San Gennaro at the top of the stairs.
  • We have stayed in Positano, Praiano, Ravello and on Capri at various intervals and, to us, Praiano is your best bet and this is one of the best locations and the best view in Praiano.

The house was lovely, it was perfect!

June 2022 - Our family of 4 stayed here when visiting this area of Italy. It was perfect! The house was lovely. The house was a short walk to the beach and accommodated my husband and I and our two teenagers very comfortably. We enjoyed our stay here very much.

We loved Praiano! It was not too busy and close to all the little towns we wanted to visit along the coast.

You made it very easy and convenient to book and get to the house. Thank you.

Travel tips

  • One Fire Beach beach was great.
  • Frankie took us out on a boat one day that is a must.
  • The pizza place on the corner had delicious food and Bar del Sole had the BEST coffee.
  • Café Mirante (located on the walk down to the beach) had the best view and fresh cocktails ever!!!

Perfect location, right in the town but still in quiet place

April 2022 - Villino Mariella's location in Praiano was perfect, right in the town but still in quiet place and the view from the villa and the terrace is amazing. You can see the sunset. Morning sun shining to the front of the house where you can enjoy breakfast.

All bedrooms located in the ground floor which is good if you want to go to bed earlier than others staying in the same villa.

Summer In Italy provided all the support we needed and answered all our questions. Very helpful employees.

Travel tips

  • There were many good restaurants just a walk from the villa, e. g. Hosteria Il Pino (with very nice sunset view), Che Bontè (good pizza), Restaurant La Brace and Kasai.
  • Hotel Smeraldo's terrace for drinks at the sunset is great.

Very comfortable with plenty of room

September 2021 - We had 6 adults and were very comfortable with plenty of room.

The property is very safe and clean. We enjoyed the upper terrace in the evenings. Our clothes dried easily after washing them in the washer. We did not cook at the house since we enjoyed all of the local options, but did use it for drinks, and snacks etc. Bring a sound machine if you like some noise to sleep. Well thought out pieces of furniture and chairs to put your luggage and clothing on. Air conditioning worked well and the view you will never tire of looking at.

I received an informative letter from Luca prior to arrival that helped with information about the local area. Also while I was deciding where to stay Luca was very helpful and honest about properties. I was very happy to find Villino Mariella as I had hoped and even better! The charm of the villa will make you smile.

We loved the locals and town, friendly and welcoming. Great distance to take a day trip to some other Amalfi Coast towns and then come back “home”. We found some of our favorite “regular” coffee, eating, drinks and hanging places.

The closest beach is very cool, the steps can be intimidating, it is worth it, take it slow and reward yourself with an amazing lemon spritzer or cold coffee at the best bar/cafe and view on the way home! The church and it’s square by the villa is charming and nice to walk thru and hang out at.

One of our adult sons rented a scooter for the day a little walk down from town for 60 euro and loved it. We did not have a car, didn’t need it and I was happy we didn’t have to worry about it.

Tina [the caretaker] was a perfect hostess and made check in very easy.

I will absolutely stay again in Villino Mariella if we come back and I will be giving the information to any of our family and friends if they are planning on going to the area.

Travel tips

  • The local grocery and little shop next to it had extra toilet paper, bug spray and friendly help for any things you may need more of.
  • The people were very friendly and happy to help.
  • The recycling/ garbage is a bit different but the signage hanging in the kitchen makes it easy and pick up is right outside of the door.
  • If people are next door you may hear them a little outside but they can hear you too :) not a big deal.
  • Check out was simple and security deposit was refunded with no problem. Treat the home as you would want someone to treat yours and everything is great.

Clean, quiet, and close to the center of town

September 2021 - Villino Mariella was wonderful. Clean, quiet, and close to the center of town. The view from the two terraces is gorgeous, just what you imagine when you book a trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Our host was helpful and extremely communicative.

Would definitely recommend this villa.

Summer In Italy was very helpful and communicative throughout the process. The long informational document that we received about the villa was useful. And I greatly appreciated that when our 2020 trip was cancelled due to Covid, they allowed us to keep our deposit in the form of a credit, which we gladly applied to a new booking in 2021.

April 2019 - Villino Mariella is fabulous! It is beautiful, convenient, well equipped, and well priced.

My greatest concern is that if I tell you how great it really is, you will stay there making it more difficult for me to get back in!

The owners representative is helpful and responsive to your concerns.

Summer In Italy did a wonderful job! Your agency's responsiveness and the clarity of your listings was most helpful. It was clear that you wanted us to have a good experience. We had a wonderful time, and have already recommended you to friends. We will continue to do so. Grazie mille.

Travel tips

  • Learn trust! The people you will deal with in Praiano are wonderful. The shopkeepers are honest, the buses are safe (albeit exciting!) and reliable, and the welcome you feel is genuine.
  • Learn some basic Italian! It is a sign of respect for their culture and will take you a long way. These are proud people who will be much more willing to sound a little foolish in English if you first show willingness to sound foolish in their language. Plus you're more likely to get what you think you want! I can recommend Pimsleur (good basic stuff), Rosetta Stone (better, but requires more commitment), Standard Deviants DVD program (the 2 DVD set is an extremely helpful as a follow-up to Pimsleur -- www.standarddeviants.com), and "The Complete Idiots Guide to Italian (a terrific adjunct to any other program, but difficult without a source to listen to).
  • Make sure you know how to turn on the kitchen hot water. It's separate from the downstairs bath hot water. And be sure you learn how to turn on the water to the washing machine. There's a tap in the garden that was off at first
  • it took some figuring out.
  • Do your homework! Have an idea of what is nearby that you may want to see and do. In addition to the usual guidebooks, the History, Discovery, and Travel channels are great resources. Pre-arranging private guides and drivers was expensive but extremely helpful to our group (for Capri, write Tony -- [email protected] / punctual, safe reliable driver: Claudio Lucibello -- [email protected] / for Pompei and other ancient sites you want Adolfo -- [email protected])
  • Get used to walking and to stairs before you come. You'll thank yourself!
  • Leave some time off! You'll enjoy "Il dolce fare niente!"

October 2018 - We had a wonderful time at Villino Mariella. You simply cannot beat the views or the location. It's easy to catch the bus to everywhere you might want to go.

Our two teenage kids loved having their own rooms opening onto the terrace. We loved not having to share a bathroom with them!

The pictures on the website didn't do the villa justice in terms of its spaciousness. It's also incredibly private and quiet. The kitchen is far better than I expected from the picture. Everything you could want is there.

We read reviews of Summer in Italy on the 'net. We thought the service was excellent. All the written information provided was comprehensive, and the one time we contacted Summer in Italy with a query it was answered very promptly. Thanks. We'll recommend you to others.

Travel tips

  • Restaurant La Brace was the best restaurant within easy walking distance that we found - wonderful homemade pasta and seafood risotto.
  • Angela's Alimentari is a bit further to walk that the other supermarket but Angela is a sweetie and her English is pretty good too.
  • We enjoyed climbing the mountain to San Domenico Convent and then to the very top - fantastic views, but take water, it's a hard climb.
  • The Torre di Grado swimming spot beats La Gavitella hands down for cleanliness, character and convenience.
  • Ravello is worth a trip, especially to see the gardens. Unless you like your coffee weak don't bother with Bar del Sole, make your own at home - there are lots of espresso makers in the kitchen cupboard!

October 2017 - Praiano is an excellent town to stay in. The people are very friendly (but not much English spoken). Praiano is away from the heavy tourist crowds (of Positano and Amalfi) which we really liked.

The Villa is in an excellent spot with amazing views. It was even better than the pictures (views and villa).

Everything was clean and in good condition.

Try to visit during a festival of any type.

May 2017 - We loved our stay in Villino Mariella. Everything was as pictured on the website -- the views were fantastic.

It has the best kitchen I've ever had in a rental, and I love cooking, especially in Italy with the fresh produce, so that was important. (As is typically the case in rentals, the knives were dull, but I left behind a new Oxo paring knife, hope that will help future cooks.)

I think Praiano is a wonderful town to stay in -- markets and butchers are close at hand for shopping, and good restaurants too, and while there are certainly other tourists staying there, it is not such a destination for sight-seers that you're mobbed by them.

Sitting out on the terrace every late afternoon and early evening was the best part of the day. As long as you are prepared to go up and down a lot of stairs and hills, you should enjoy Praiano.

I can't recall exactly how I found your website, but had a great experience renting with you, and hope to do so on our next trip to Italy.

April 2007 - We loved the location of Villino Mariella in Praiano. The hustle and horror of Amalfi and Positano when packed with tourists was so great to leave behind. Although we saw other tourists in Praiano, we didn't seem to outnumber the locals who were friendly and fabulous.

The proximity of a bunch of excellent restaurants was much appreciated. And of course coffee and chocolate pastries at Bar Del Sole was a daily pleasure.

Having the church and its very popular plaza near by was a huge plus. We could take our 3 year old and she could play with all the local kids and families each evening, which she loved.

The alimentari and pharmacy were close and this too this was a huge help.

Luca, the caretaker, was very friendly and helpful, and we really liked him. We felt like Villino Mariella was our refuge after a busy tourist day - and the 2 days we spent in Praiano itself were relaxing and fun.

The only drawbacks of Villino Mariella were the beds (not comfy) and the interior of the house (not comfy, oddly arranged), and the 2nd bathroom was too small for 2 people to try to share. And somebody needs to warn people that the spiral stairs are not appropriate for the elderly or small children. It has huge pre-schooler killing holes down the side of it, so we made the rule our 3 year old couldn't use them herself and one of us carried her up or down the 22 steps. But - the terrace with views totally made up for these shortcomings in our view. We would recommend it to people - and have already - with the only warning of the crazy stairs.

We loved your service. Your prompt answers to e-mail questions and all the in-depth info about the area was fabulous. Plus your website was superior to a ton of others we looked at.

Travel tips

  • We agree with other reviewers that Bar del Sole was a daily must for coffee and chocolate pastries. The restaurants nearby were also excellent - especially La Strada, Il Pino, and Hotel Tramonto d'Oro.
  • The bus runs toward Positano were less crowded that the ones toward Amalfi which were already standing room only in April! And the boats between Positano and Amalfi or Capri were excellent.
  • The Villa Cimbrone garden in Ravello is a must!
