Charming and unique

August 2017 - We found Villa Safira charming and unique and the updates, such as well appointed, high-end bathrooms, made our stay comfortable. The accommodation is a bit quirky for modern day travelers as the house is extremely large but the space is not always particularly usable. For example, there are several rooms on the second floor, including a long dining room but this is not convenient, given the kitchen is on the first floor. The kitchen is a bit unusual as it seems to be more of an industrial, restaurant style kitchen. Not particularly charming or cozy but functional. Appreciated the bottled water - both frizzante and flat. We paid for it, but it was convenient to not have to go get it from the store ourselves. Same with the beer keg in the kitchen. Charged a very reasonable amount for delicious Austrian beer on tap. We loved that there were lots of towels and housecoats.

The grounds were large and well maintained. The kids loved playing hide and seek, soccer and other games. Note that the pool is about a 200 meter walk away, up hill. For us, this was fine and kids old enough to swim on own but may be issue with those with younger kids.

We would book with Summer In Italy again as our experience was very positive.

Travel tips

  • The location near Pistoia was excellent with easy access to Lucca, Florence, San Gimignano and other wonderful Tuscan towns.
  • Lucca, Castellina in Chianti and San Gimignano were our favourite day trips but we also enjoyed a day at the beach in Viareggio.
