A fascinating walk in Perugia is along the old aqueduct that transports you into the past while giving you a unique view of the city. When the Romans arrived the first thing they did was build strong walls and city gates for defense. Then they went about ensuring their water supply by building an aqueduct along the fabled Via Appia. That classic stone waterway was expanded in the 1200s, to bring water from Mount Paccione to Fontana Maggiore in the heart of the city.

Today, the old aqueduct is a lovely lane worth strolling. It winds for three kilometers through town, past gateways, under archways, between buildings, and among balcony-bedecked palaces all outlined by parapets. It gives you a fantastic viewpoint of Medieval Perugia!
