The famed Renaissance painter, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, was born in Urbino. Better known in the English-speaking world as Raphael, the house where he was born and raised is a museum filled with artwork which should definitely be on your itinerary when visiting Urbino.

Raphael trained under his father, Giovanni Santi, a painter, but quickly excelled and superceded the abilities of his teacher. Combining philosophy with his studies in proportion and perspective, Raphael became an internationally known artist. He was born in 1483, so the Renaissance splendor of Urbino was his classroom.

In 1873 an accademia was formed here in his birth home, amassing the collection of artwork and furnishings you see today. The Raphael Academy also sponsors exhibits, lectures, art courses and studies on an academic level.

The Casa Natale di Raffaello in Urbino has a varying opening schedule depending on the season. Check the museum website for current hours.
