A unique museum located inside the largest of Perugia's city gates is the Museo delle Porte e Le Mura. It is a vertical museum, laid out on the various levels of the tower, known as the Cassero di Sant'Angelo, a tall watch tower topped with jagged crenellations. The Porta Sant'Angelo was built in the 1300s with local sandstone and calcareous stone and was used for centuries as a defensive point. The gateway would be closed against invaders, while the city walls were meant to be impenetrable.

The museum has displays on the construction of the various walls and gates- Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance - along with a history of the urban development of Perugia. The upward ascent culminates at the roof, the highest point in Perugia, which offers stunning views of the city and the beautiful countryside beyond.

The Museum of the Gateways and Walls of Perugia is open from 10:30 AM til 1:30 PM and from 3:00 PM til 6:00 PM. Closed Mondays. It is located at the end of Corso Garibaldi.
