A nine-day blow-out of sweet indulgence takes place every October in Perugia, a city known for its chocolatey confections. The city plays host to the Euro Chocolate Festival, an international expo dedicated to all things chocolate. It is the sweetest event in Italy!

Started in 1994 as a whimsical event, it has swelled in popularity, drawing 300,000 sweet-tooth visitors who appear to indulge. And what an indulgence it is! The festival takes place all over the historic center, with stands proferring all kinds of chocolate goodness. There are cocoa producers and exhibits on world traditions and trends, workshops, events and shows. And of course plenty of opportunity for tasting. The main attraction each year is the Sculpture in Chocolate, a massive masterpiece of edible artwork by skilled sculptors. It remains on display throughout the festival then is broken up and given away to visitors at the end.

If your trip to Umbria takes place in October, you'll want to chow down on the chocolate in Perugia!
