The Duomo of Arezzo is an impressive sight in its dominating position. Resting at the highest point of the city, it looks down over Arezzo and the surrounding hills and can be seen from all points around. It is dedicated to St. Donato, the patron saint of Arezzo.

The cathedral was started in 1278 but not completed until 1511. Even then, the facade remained unfinished until the late 1800s. It was built in Florentine Gothic style, with soaring ceilings and pointed arched portals. The cross vaulted ceiling is vibrantly painted with frescoes, and there are splendid stained glass windows designed by a monk in the 16th century. The artistic highlight is the fresco by local prominent artist, Piero della Francesca.
