A sculpted river canyon isn't what most people expect to find in central Italy, but this beautiful geological wonder is a spectacular phenomenon to see in Le Marche.

Located near Fossombrone, the Marmitte dei Giganti bears tall rock walls, molded by millennia of water action from the Metauro River that created an undulating gorge. The transparent river cuts through the rocks, making a unique and gorgeous landscape.

Paths lead from the bridge (Ponte Diocleziano) to the river, while others skirt the canyon and climb up the mountain. Outdoors enthusiasts love this area for the variety of hiking trails, and river kayaking opportunities.

The canyon is just two kilometers from Fossombrone at the country area called San Lazzaro.
