The Amalfi Coast is a glittering jewel that juts out into the Mediterranean. It's fabled cliffs, jaw-dropping views and heart-stopping drive are just some of its allures. The rollicking ride that takes you along the coast begins in Sorrento, winds along the insanely-steep hillside high above the sea, twists along to towns like Ravello, Positano and Amalfi before ending with a sigh at the seaport of Salerno. The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic destinations in Italy. Its beauty is worth the effort to get there.
The colors are intense here: pastel towns line up like sugar cubes on the green hills sprinkled with bright yellow lemons, overlooked by turquoise skies dotted with brilliantly white clouds, and plunging down to sapphire seas. It is quintessential summer resort atmosphere but with astonishing natural beauty. T here are tucked-away bays, deep gorges and sandy beaches. The hills offer hiking and horseback riding and tranquil towns to explore.
The people of the coast have a long affinity for their seafaring ways and fishing remains an active industry. Life is lived at a leisurely pace with artisans still carrying on their crafts, creating commodities like handmade paper, colorful ceramics, food specialties and lemon liqueur that is exported all over the world. Ferries ply the waters to transport you to the towns up and down the shore, as well as to the island of Capri. Enjoy the sun, sea spray, and crystal seas on a boating adventure during your sojourn - it's an Amalfi Coast tradition!
The cuisine is naturally centered on fresh seafood brought in daily, and the regional traditional recipes are simple but flavorful. There are homemade pastas to taste, too; fresh produce plays a big part on the plate and the flavors burst with freshness. In the hills you'll find a little heavier fare with meat. And of course, what's a summer day on the coast without a gelato or a frothy fruit drink?
