Torello

Torello

Torello rises close by Ravello, overlooking the whole Amalfi Coast. From Villa Rufolo in Ravello you will find a path leading to this village, through spectacular views and bougainvillea clinging everywhere to the walls. In the middle of the  track, you will easily find the Church of St Annunziata, built in 1281 by the noble Fusco family. The church was originally decorated with plenty of admirable marble statues, but during the XVII century, the same family, moved many icons and statues outside Ravello.
For that reason, the church has been shamely used for meetings and conferences until 1982-1983, when it was renewed.

A few metres away, there is the mystic Church of St Maria delle Grazie, built in 1163 with an interior design similar to the Islamic Mosques. It will give you a deep sense of tranquillity, miles away from the everyday urban traffic and chaos.

Arriving in Torello, you will probably see clothes hanging out in the sun, children playing in the streets, the colour and scent of flowers and plants around you...an out-and-out dive into the past!

The Church of St Pietro dalla Costa along with the Church of St Michele Arcangelo are the oldest in town... from there you will observe Ravello and its villas from an entirely new perspective.

On the 16th of September the village of Torello celebrates the Vergine Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows). In ancient times, the festival was a prelude to the annual vendemmia (the grape harvest). The statue representing Vergine Addolorata, dressed in black, is carried through the streets on the shoulders of some volunteers, drawing a crowd of believers. It is so suggestive...just unmissable! The procession starts from Minori, people pass through an ancient pathway, that used to be the only connection with the coast. At the end of the day, you will admire a spectacular fireworks show.
