Caserta

Caserta

The Plain of Volturno in the Campania countryside homes the ancient city of Caserta, renowned all over the world for the majestic XVIII century Royal Palace, the so-called Reggia di Caserta.

Caserta includes numerous districts, among which we must mention San Leucio, famous for the silk manufacturing and the Royal Belvedere, and the medieval hamlet of Casertavecchia.

Some prehistoric findings witness that the city has been inhabited from very ancient times, even though the real founders of Caserta were the Longobards. The first housing nucleus was Casertavecchia, later merged with the Duchy of Benevento and the Principality of Salerno. During the IX century innumerable centres in the area of Caserta were attacked and destroyed by the Saracens and often, from their ruins, were built new towns.

Caserta became popular for the flourishing market and the residence of Acquaviva, counts of Caserta, that inherited the town in 1511 from the counts of Ratta, who had enlarged the old tower in town with a Renaissance fortified building and a marvellous garden, that thrilled many travellers of the XVI and XVII centuries.

Unfortunately, from the XV century the city followed the fate of the Kingdom of Naples: underwent the Spanish domination, until the cession to the Bourbons in 1734.

The new Caserta, built around that Longobard sighting tower, dates back to the second half of the XVIII century: the quick development and population increase was due to the local manufacturing factories. Caserta increased its importance with the Royal Palace, heavily wanted by Carlo III of Bourbon in 1751, to the detriment of the older town.

The perfect symmetry of the streets, that repeats the structure of the ancient Roman cities and the enlightenment city's concept, will capture your attention and your heart.

Apart from the Royal Palace of Caserta, you should visit:

  • the Dome (XIX century), preserves numerous works of art, among which you'll admire a painting by Girolamo Starace and eight seventeenth-century tondos, representing some Doctors of the Clergy;
  • Monument dedicated to Vanvitelli (XIX century) in the homonym lovely small piazza, at the centre of the city;
  • Church of St Sebastiano (planned by Vanvitelli) at one nave. The atrium guards a very interesting painting dated back to the second half of XVII century, also belonged to the Church of St Elena.
