Castellabate

Castellabate is one of the most beautiful old towns, not only of the Cilento National Park, but of all the southern Tyrrhenian coast. You will reach it along a steep, winding road, at around 280 meters above the sea level, where a beautiful panorama separates you from the sea.

This enchanting medieval village is embellished with streets and buildings extremely rich in history. Its gorgeous position already releases a unique charm: it is wrapped into the beautiful Mediterranean maquis that makes the Bay of Ogliastro Marina and the Isle of Licosa even more precious; immersed into long golden beaches alternated by rough rocks, that contend for the primacy to the magic sea, here venerated as a deity.

The town hat several marinas, often recognized as villages of their own as they have grown beyond the size of the "center": Santa Maria di Castellabate, San Marco di Castellabate, Ogliastro Marina and the smaller Lago, Annunziata and Alano. Castellabate, Santa Maria, San Marco and Ogliastro Marina enjoy a privileged geographical position, on the sea, closed in among Punta Tresino, Punta Licosa, and the gentle hills of ancient Cilento.

Rich of history, Castellabate ties its name to the founder of its castle, built in 1123 by the IV Abbot of Cava de Tirreni, San Costabile Gentilcore. The medieval town is splendidly conserved and generally well restored, in keeping to the original town plan, with small kitchen gardens, intercommunicating houses and narrow lanes. The plan was developed over the centuries around the Castle and the Basilica Romanica of Santa Maria de Giulia and its beautiful bells. The town boasts beautiful examples of religious and residential architecture, often of the seventh century, like the Iaquinto Palace or the Perrotti Palace, proudly tied to the hospitality reserved at Gioacchino Murat.
