Ischia
For those who love to explore on foot, there are many narrow roads on the island winding through the vineyards, hillsides covered in exotic plants, and caves hewed in volcanic rock. Indeed, the island is volcanic in origin and the island's most prominent geographical feature is Monte Epomeo, which last erupted in 1301 and is now belived to be inactive. The volcanic origin of the island accounts for its many therapeutic hot thermal springs for which the island is famous. The largest community is at Ischia Porto on the eastern coast of the island, situated in the crater of the Monte Epomeo volcano, and serves as the island's main port. Another bustling town is Forio on the western coast, with its many restaraunts, cafes and bars nestled along pretty tree-lined streets.
Principal
Tourist Attractions The principal tourist attractions of Ischia are its climate, beaches, and
its many hot thermal springs and spas. Thermal Springs. The thermal waters of Ischia are without a doubt the top tourist drawing card of the island. For centuries the reputedly therapeutic properties of the thermal waters have attracted visitors to the natural springs, and to the spas and resorts created around them. The thermal mineral waters are said to be good for a wide range of ailments and conditions, including rheumatism, arthritis, obesity, and gynaecological problems. Angelo Rizzoli is the man credited for turning Ischia into a major international tourist destination by building luxury hotels with spas included in the 1950's and 60's, and by creating the slogan "Ischia the Island of Eternal Youth". More recently, luxury hotels with health, detoxication, mud therapy, and beauty centers staffed by highly trained specialists in these areas have attracted a large international clientele. Ischia's natural hot springs range in temperature between 20 and 40 degrees centigrade and, while there are spas all over the island, the largest are concentrated in Ischia Porto and Maronti.
Beaches. Ischia is dotted with several picturesque beaches with fine volcanic sand. Citara beach at the foot of Mount Epomeo, is one of the most popular on the island. The crystal-clear sea water here mixes with the thermal water spas on the shore in several places, allowing you to bathe in the sea and reap the benefits of the thermal water simultaneously. Getting there Ischia is reachable by ferry both from Naples and Sorrento and Amalfi. Our Favorite Restaurants in Ischia
