Agropoli

Agropoli is a coastal agricultural village, located at the beginning of Cilento National Park, 53 km (about 33 miles) south of Salerno. Its name derives from the Greek "acropolis", "high town", although it seems to have been founded by the Byzantines. As a matter of fact, the most interesting part of town is the "high town", the original medieval village which overlooks the sea and is perched high on the cliff. A great place to keep a look out, as the Byzantine castle suggests, although it didn't stop the Saracens eventual conquest.

Dominated by such a historical centre, with its beautiful castle, accessible through a remarkable door, Agropoli is the largest and most lively town in the Cilento National Park.

The town, where have been recently found some tombs of an age prior to the byzantine period, keeps also the medieval ruins of San Francesco's monastery, the church of Holy Mary of Constantinople (XVI century), San Marco's, San Francesco's, Tresino and Pagliarulo towers, in fairly good conditions.

A small port, yet the largest in the area, a traditional hospitality, the Trentova beach and its lovely bay contribute to make Agropoli a place definitely worth visiting. It is a very popular resort with Italians, who appreciate the excellent choice of good and affordable restaurants, the sandy beaches and its nightlife.

Agropoli also hosts the main train station for the area, with excellent connections for travelers coming both from the North and from the South.
