Atrani
The little village of Atrani is found at the end of the
Dragone valley. Of ancient and noble origins, it is now a lively holiday
resort.
Up until '500 Atrani was the most aristocratic of the suburbs of
Amalfi. The church of S. Salvatore de' Bireto, with its wealth of history
and memories, was the church of the doges of Amalfi: it was here that the
person charged with government of the Republic was elected and here it was
that the investiture took place, with the placing of the
doge's beret (hence the church's name). Finally, the doges were also buried
here. The extremely beautiful eleventh century bronze door is the work of
Constantinople's finest craftsmen. The collegiate church of S. maria
Maddalena, with its beautiful cupola in majolic, dominates a panoramic
little square with a wonderful view of the town.
