Agropoli

A view of the quey of AgropoliAgropoli is a coastal agricultural village, located at the beginning of Cilento National Park, at 53 km (about 33 miles) from Salerno. Its name derives from the Greek 'high city', although it seems to have been founded by the Byzantines. The main town overlooks the sea and is perched on high cliffs. A great place to keep a look out, as the Byzantine castle suggests, although it didn't stop the Saracens eventual conquest.

Dominated by the historical centre, with a feudal castle accessible through a beautiful door, it represents one of the most important and lively place of Cilento National Park.

The town, where have been recently found some tombs of an age prior to the byzantine period, keeps also the medieval ruins of S. Francesco's monastery, the church of Holy Mary of Costantinople (XVI century), S. Marco's, S. Francesco's, Tresino and Pagliarulo towers, in fairly good conditions.

Stairway to the acropolisA small port, a traditional and conforting hospitality, the charming beach of Trentova bay contribute to feature Agropoli a place in which have a nice journey.

Moreover, interesting places are located at just few miles from Agropoli: Matonti di Laureana, with the Museum of Natural history of Cilento (for visit address to the Town Hall, tel. 0974/832022) and Rocca Cilento with the ancient Castle.

Its train station is well connected by train, both from the North and the South of Italy.
