Travel tips

  • The villa is an amazing place and we will have wonderful memories for a very long time of our stay there. Don't be put off by the 97 steps because they are very easy. After you've been in the area for a few days, you will feel that 97 steps are nothing! There are steps all over the place.
  • The villa is close enough to the town of Amalfi to walk in. All downhill going into town but a slope returning. There are no shops nearby and everything has to be purchased in town. The hotel has a shuttle service into Amalfi twice a day so it pays to fit the shopping in with the shuttle service.
  • The Sita bus stop is literally right at the villa gate and transport is cheap if you buy a 3 day bus ticket, which takes you all over the vast Campania area, including Naples and Pompeii.
  • There is a bus from Rome (Euro 20.50) which actually drops you off at the villa gate.
  • Amalfi is a wonderful base for lots of other towns plus has some wonderful hiking trails, including Walk of the Gods from Agerola to Positano.
  • There were a lot of small (sand flies?) biting things in the evenings so you will definitely need insect repellent. We sprayed our rooms before going to bed.

July 2011 - Our family of 7 loved our stay at the Villa Meridiana. The views were spectacular, the hospitality of the staff extremely gracious, and the peace and quiet unbeatable.

We slept well every night in the air conditioned bedrooms, and the staff recommended and shuttled us to fantastic restaurants. Some nights we cooked in the older but charming kitchen and ate out on the veranda with a centerpiece of fresh flowers from the garden.

We felt safe and well cared for with daily maid service and never encountered any unfriendliness from the locals.

Travel tips

  • We shopped in town for our breakfast and occasional dinners in and used the taxi service in town to help us carry our loads up.
  • To stay at Villa Meridiana you must be able to climb steps. In fact, enjoying Amalfi and surrounding towns involves a lot of walking.

October 2010 - We LOVED our stay at Villa Meridiana!

Initially, we were a little worried about the 95 steps down to it, but it sounds a lot harder than it actually was (unless you have knee problems).

We were two couples, so we had tons of space, and the 4 bathrooms were a real extravagance, but helpful with everyone trying to get ready at the same time! Each of the upstairs bedrooms had its own private balcony, which was really nice every morning to throw open the shutters and see that gorgeous view. Only the upstairs bedrooms are air-conditioned, which we used a few nights. We were there in early October, so the weather was perfect... warm during the day and usually cool at night. We thought that it was possible to walk down to the beach/town from the back of the villa ...it isn't. To get to town you must go back up the 95 steps, turn right (a destra!) and walk to town (15 min walk).

There is a beach in the center of Amalfi, also harbor, taxi stand, ferries... shops and town are to the left, harbor to the right. To get to a cute, more out of the way beach: go up the 95 steps and turn Left(a sinistra!). After a short walk, you'll see Degli Artisti Beach. Go down 450 steps! We brought wine & fruit & cheese and kept worrying about going back UP 450 steps! We lucked out, as we found some construction guys working down there -- we saw them leave through a cave! We followed and they let us take the 2 elevators to the top!! (It came out in some hotel on the main road there...)

Helpful advice for those considering staying here:

Bring laundry detergent, liquid fabric softener and a clothes line... the front-load washer is in the kitchen, one cycle takes 2-3 hours, there is no dryer (common in Italy). We did a few little loads, and hung our laundry on a clothesline we brought, on our balcony.

Bring some insect repellent... we sat on the veranda overlooking the sea almost every night, and although the bugs were not too bad, there were mosquitoes.

Bring an alarm clock! We did not bring one, thinking each bedroom would have one, but they didn't.

The owner of the villa might consider adding an American coffee maker. Although we had wonderful cappucinos every morning at (the included) breakfast at the hotel across the road, a cup of coffee as we were getting ready every morning would have been wonderful. Also, a cutting board and sharp knife would be useful. A supply of matches, since the cook-top is gas, would also be helpful.

Hair-dryers were provided in each bathroom, but they were old/European... affixed to the wall and difficult to use. I would bring my own, along with a current-converter and plug adapter.

The affiliation with the hotel across the road was wonderful. We had all the benefits of staying at a hotel: daily maid service, tours to area attractions (ask early in the week for the schedule!), and breakfast... yet the peace and quiet and space provided by the villa. Simona and Franco were so helpful and pleasant, we really enjoyed speaking with them.

The included daily breakfast (at the hotel) was great. The daily buffet included your choice of coffee or cappuccino and: yogurt, fresh fruit, fresh croissants or pastry, baked pears dusted with cinnamon & sugar, cheese, salami, bruschetta, tomato & mozzarella salad, toast, jams, cereal, milk and juice. It was a great way to start the day.

Loved the service that Summer In Italy provided... we never would have found a villa like this on our own. All questions and concerns were answered promptly, and the villa was just as described. When we go back to Italy, we will use Summer In Italy again for sure!

Thank You! Your service was wonderful.

Travel tips

  • Walking down to the town of Amalfi is so easy... it's all downhill. Initially we were scared as it is very busy and mostly no sidewalks, but it is very common practice and we had no problems.
  • If you are driving there (as we did), mostly your car will be parked at the hotel, and you won't need it. However, we did take it on day trips to Positano and Ravello. I don't recommend driving there (the coast) unless you have nerves of steel... VERY narrow roads, hairpin turns, 300 ft. up on the side of a mountain. One husband in our group did all the mountain/coast driving, and he did a great job. Positano is a pleasant 20 minute drive, but once you get there, parking is horrendous. The drive up to Ravello proved a better day-trip... they even have parking lots up there! Ravello is absolutely gorgeous... do not miss it.
  • We took the 1/2 day tour to Pompeii which was outstanding.
  • We did the ferry to Capri from the harbor in Amalfi. We practically jogged down the hill to catch the first ferry (8:30 am) only to be told it was cancelled and the first ferry would be at 9:50am! Upon arriving in Capri, it was a little cloudy and looking like it might rain. We got the first boat available from Marina Grande (where you land with ferry) to the other side of the island, to see the Blue Grotto. Then transfer to a little rowboat to go inside the grotto. So, you must pay for 3 tickets (ferry, boat to grotto, and rowboat into grotto) in order to see it. Then a tip to your boatman (a few euros) is expected. It was a must-see, but having done it once, don't know that I would do it again. Apparently, there is a "Green Grotto" right in Amalfi that is almost as nice... cruises may be arranged at a shop right at the harbor, by the taxi stand.
  • One night, we started to walk to town for dinner... passed by a little restaurant (Restaurant La Preferita) right on the main street 1/2 way to town & decided to stop. We had a wonderful dinner, and Italian songs played on a keyboard, and free Limoncello afterwards. We sat on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, it was wonderful.
  • We were able (thanks to another post on this site) to get taxi rides back to the villa from town every night for 10 euros when we bargained. The only day this didn't work was Sunday (I guess it's busier then?)
  • We arrived after lemons were in season, but still found a few on the trees... we made fresh lemonade!
  • Bring a few candles (or buy some in town, as we did) for lovely nights sitting on the terrace with some wine.
  • Definitely get some Limoncello.... made locally and served everywhere. Get the best quality... we liked Antichi Sapori d'Amalfi.
  • In town, check out the little alleyways for out of the way shops and restaurants... you will find some real jewels!

July 2010 - Beautiful location, we had 4 adults and 4 children and the villa was perfect.

We walked to village of Amalfi almost everyday, did several day trips all which can be organized by front desk of managing hotel.

The kitchen was adequate but could have used a few more utensils (sharp knives for example)...

I would highly recommend this villa for vacation rental.

Travel tips

  • Disregard directions to villa from Rome, best way is single train from Rome to Salerno, then walk to ferry terminal (200 m) and take ferry to Amalfi... We arrived via Sorrento (long and not so comfortable) and departed via Salerno (excellent). [Please note: we agree that the ferry trip is a lot more fun, but unfortunately ferries are unreliable because they are dependent on the weather, and only run until mid-afternoon. For this reason in our directions we can not recommend ferries as we strive to provide the route that is sure to get you to your destination. If you wish to do the trip by ferry and are arriving in the afternoon it is very important to check at what time the last ferry leaves for Amalfi.]

May 2010 - Our family group of 8 adults loved Villa Meridiana. We stayed for a week and wished it was for a month!

The views are spectacular, the villa met all our needs (except we had to 'rotate' due to the fourth bedroom not having ocean views) and the cleaning service was exceptional. We loved the villa, it had a lovely feeling to it and the tiles are amazing. We even loved the cute seahorse wall lights!

We received fantastic service by Giorgio and Simona at the nearby hotel. We often stopped in for a quick drink before descending the 90+ steps to the villa!

We loved Villa Meridiana and have told many of our friends about its location and have showed photos. Plus the villa is in a great location.

I have done a little travel within Australia and overseas - the service and assistance plus correct advice from Summer In Italy has been the best I have received. Emails were responded to promptly and all questions answered appropriately, and kindly. The first email I received encouraged me to continue using your company. I found your details when searching online for accommodation for our holiday and I am SO GLAD that I found your website. We have recommended you to our friends and I have put up a sign at work. Summer In Italy will be our first contact should we be able to return in the future.

Thank you so much for everything - your assistance made sure that this was a fantastic week for our family of eight! We loved our holiday in Amalfi.

Travel tips

  • On the first day we walked down to the piazza in Amalfi. Lots of lovely little restaurants/pizzerias/cafes etc there but make sure to go into the side streets as are lots of choices there too.
  • Taxi drivers are great and will often negotiate a set amount eg: our first taxi back to the villa was 20 euro, after that we paid 10 as we found our negotiation skills! Usually we had the same driver. We also negotiated a set price for drop off and pick up to Ravello.
  • It's an easy walk from the villa down to Amalfi and you can catch buses, ferries, taxi's to all that Amalfi Coast has to offer. We caught ferry to Positano and Isle Capri (a must-do is to enjoy a boat ride around the island and catch bus on other side up to Capri, have long lunch and then catch funicular down to harbour) and bus to Maiori and taxi to Ravello.
  • Pompeii was incredible and we spent over half a day there (this was unexpected!).
  • Up the hill from the villa is a small pizzeria which the boys would wander up to and pick up a couple of pizzas - this was very convenient as we could buy a couple of beers as well!

October 2009 - Our group found the Villa Meridiana a lovely and restful place to stay. We had 10 people and we did not feel cramped at all.

We used the fireplace as we were there in mid October, but we also loved the terraces on the warmer days.

The daily maid service was an extra bonus that none of us expected. The staff at the adjacent hotel were most helpful.

The service we received from Summer in Italy was always prompt and pleasant. I would not hesitate to use them again. Everyone in our group had a wonderful time, and would love to return to the Villa Meridiana in the future.

Travel tips

  • Do not be afraid of the 93 steps to the villa. After all the gelato you may need the exercise.
  • We used the SITA bus system and found it most convenient.

July 2007 - We very much enjoyed Villa Meridiana! We stayed there for two weeks and it was perfect for what we needed.

Since we were a larger group, we wanted to be together, make some wonderful meals and spend time with breath-taking views. We wanted to sleep in and have our own schedule. Hotels don't give you the same feeling and Villa Meridiana was perfect.

Being off the main street 90 steps below the noise made you feel like you had your own private oasis. Both the lower level porch and top bedroom views were amazing.

Travel tips

  • DEFINITELY go to the local beach very close to the Villa - Degli Artisti. It's a short walk up the road and even though it has 465 steps down to the beach, it is a wonderful local beach with a great restaurant.
  • Go to Trattoria da Ciccio for dinner.
  • Don't mess with the SITA bus if you're going to downtown Amalfi, you can walk it in 15-20 minutes - it's all downhill so that's not too bad. Then take a taxi up or walk up. The SITA schedule really doesn't exist - you can't rely on the times and the walk is much better. BUT if you're going to destinations further away, you may want to take the SITA bus.

June 2006 - We had one of the best vacations ever. My family loved it. The location, the lemon groves, the beautiful flowers made Villa Meridiana very impressive.

The 90+ steps to the street were a long climb, but I had expected them. It was good exercise!

My two young grandchildren enjoyed exploring the house and the grounds. They particularly liked the family of chickens that lived nearby.

My wife Donna and I love Amalfi. My Nonna was born nearby and my Nonno was born in Avellino near Napoli, so I felt like I had come home. By blood, I am proud to be Italiano.

May 2006 - We rented Villa Meridiana and Villa Moresca in order to accommodate our group size and had a lovely week.

The only negative is the warning to watch out for those 92 steps – going up is a killer. The positives are that the villas are lovely, the bedrooms and baths are comfortable, the views are to die for and the porch where we ate and drank each day was conducive to relaxation.

I got up early and made the coffee and watched the cruise ships and five-masted sailers come in to Amalfi every day.

Although the roads here are narrow and harrowing to drive, it is worth it because of the beauty that abounds.

The best things about our stay was the staff that manages the villas. Senorina Luisa, Simone and Senor Franco were delightful and always ready to assist, whether making dinner suggestions/reservations, helping with our poor Italian, our carting luggage up the 92 steps – they were great!

April 2006 - Villa Meridiana is in a fantastic location with great views of the sea. We loved being so close to Amalfi yet at the same time having the tranquility of the endless terraces of lemon trees falling away down to the sea.

The staff at the nearby hotel were also very helpful in assisting us with local trips and having a daily cleaner was also wonderful.

We have no hesitation in recommending this villa.

The whole booking process was very simple. Your web site is clear, comprehensive and accurate. If only all web based sites were as good.

October 2005 - Villa Meridiana is a treasure. Our party of 6 was very comfortable and the view from the terraces exceeded our expectations!

Coffee in the morning and unwinding in the evening from these terraces while watching the boats sail by and the lights of nearby Amalfi was the best relaxation imaginable.

Beds were excellent and baths very clean. Kitchen was adequately equipped (though a good knife would have been nice!); living room/dining room very basic.

The service from the hotel across the street was first-rate. They went out of their way to accommodate us.

A great experience and a wonderful villa!

Dealing with you has been a wonderful experience. Thanks for your expertise and quick reponse. We loved our stay in Amalfi!

April 2005 - Our entire family was very comfortable and so impressed with the villa. It couldn't have suited us any better. We loved the garden and lemon trees. We watched the fishing boats from the terrace in the early morning and walked or drove to Amalfi village daily and had a geat time.

The location was perfect and yet quiet and secluded. We were able to ferry to Capri and short trips to Positano and other neighboring villages made time spent in the car minimal.

The weather even cooperated and the days were sunny and warm.

Shopping was fantastic and the food incredible.

We had small snacks at the villa and found the kitchen well stocked with everything we needed.

The maid service was such a nice bonus and the hotel staff was most helpful. It was good to have English speaking advice and answers to questions so available to us.

We are already planning another trip and so are members of the extended family! We were so impressed with everything from the complete arrangements prior to arrival -- to the beautiful villa itself -- the wonderful staff to help at the hotel and best of all the beautiful Italian seaside and village we experienced.

All that we did was beyond our dreams and our memories will be with us forever. Our photos capture the views but the memories of the people, places and FOOD will be in our hearts forever! I am so grateful to have found you -- our trip was the Best because of you and the Villa Meridiana!!

November 2004 - Our experience of the Villa Meridiana was exceptional: we loved its historical significance, being of Saracen origins, as well as its modern-day manifestation.

Private, quiet, immaculate; three easy flights of steps through a virtual garden of Eden to the main road, bus stop and hotel. Only a 15 minute walk along the coastal road takes you into town where you can find everything you could possibly need or want.

Surrounded by lemon groves, tangerine and orange trees, framed by magenta bouganvilla, every view from this property is marvelous: white-washed archways and floor-to-ceiling doorways opening to the sea. Rooms are spacious, CLEAN and well supplied. We could fall asleep in the glow of the moon and awaken each morning with the warm sun on our faces.

There are very private and extensive balconies that afford views in 300 degrees: mountains and sea, castles and convents, Amalfi, Conca and the distant shores of Salerno, Paestum and beyond.

The location is tranquil and private. We were there in November and saw no other visitors on the property along this communal hillside. There is a glorious series of stairs descending to a stone dock at sea level, where you can see local fisherman on the water, sun yourself and during the season, take a boat to the Amalfi harbor.

The kitchen is nicely stocked (even had olive oil, fresh garlic and condiments) and is large enough for family and friends to cook together, with dining tables there, in the living room and outside (WOW). The stove worked well, 'frig was normal size. A wonderful space opening to the outside patio and porch with a grill.

The heating system worked beautifully when we needed it. Lots of hot water for the showers; but alas, no bath tubs for those of us who wanted to soak. Good washing machine with laundry soap; bring your liquid fabric softener.

It is important to know that this property is affiliated with a nearby hotel, which is directly across the road from the entrance to the villa. The hotel ownership and staff are totally committed to your comfort and want to provide a totally positive experience. They are guardian angels sent by Summer In Italy: invisible, available, kind and caring.

The villa is only a five minute walk to an extraordinary fish market where watermen from Salerno sell their daily catch of octopus, squid, cuttlefish, langostino and shrimp (SO sweet), snapper, anchovie...you get the idea! They speak good english and will fillet your fish if you ask! You can also purchase jars of products to take home.

After traveling from Milan to Florence, through Tuscany to Rome, we decided that being in Amalfi is all you really need if you are looking for a fully Italian experience; this area has it all. Day trips to Paestum, Cilento and Pompeii, Naples and Rome are easy. We didn't have a car and didn't miss it for a moment. You have to be pretty patient with the bus system, and learn to ask very exact questions, not only what time the next bus might be, but exactly WHERE to catch it! And purchase your train tickets IN ADVANCE at the stations or on-line; buying tickets after Friday for the weekend can be IMPOSSIBLE.

"Summer In Italy" is a marvelous organization of travel experts, with virtually instant availability. Your web-site is oustanding; your advice is thoughtful and consistently reliable. From my initial contact, through the rental agreement and confirmation process, you provided comprehensive information and thorough directions.

You did not leave one stone unturned or one question unanswered. There were no surprises, no additional expenses. And, our contacts at the villa, the hotel staff and grounds keepers, were above and beyond our expectations. We felt very much at home and never "alone" in the event that we needed help or had any questions.
