September 2011 - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Rutilia. We are two active retired couples. We were impressed that the owner provided a bottle of Estate wine, a bottle of Estate oil and a home baked cake when we arrived; along with everything required for breakfast for the first morning. The owner also provides a comprehensive booklet with useful local information. Casa Rutilia is well located to explore Tuscany; and is close to Siena.

We received three vey pleasant surprises. One was a free walking tour of Siena with a local guide; the second was a tasting of Estate wines in the restored stables; and the third was a wonderful home cooked meal served in the Estate kitchen. We have already recommended Casa Rutilia to friends and family.

Travel tips

  • A car is a must... unless you are on a biking holiday.
  • Take advantage of the Siena walking tour, the wine tasting and home cooked meal.
  • The local restaurant is very close, serves good food, and is very good value.
  • Parking in Siena is difficult. Talk to the owner about where to park.
  • A GPS is very handy.
  • There is a very good supermarket in nearby Colle Val D'Elsa.

October 2010 - The people who run Casa Rutilia were lovely, most especially Paola and Loretta... They were friendly, generous and helpful. We were delightfully surprised by a bottle of wine, a basket of fruit, bread, cake and numerous goodies for breakfast.

The kitchen was well equipped, which we appreciated. As well, we enjoyed walking in the estate grounds.

We were told ahead of time that there was no central heating and chose to go ahead with the booking, however, we would not recommend staying at Casa Rutilia so late in the year. The weather was cooler than we expected and the rooms were impossible to heat just with the fireplace. At any warmer time of the year we would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation.

We were very pleased with the service we received from Summer in Italy and would not hesitate to book through you again. Thank you for your help.

Travel tips

  • If you are staying at Casa Rutilia, do try the restaurant just up the road. Delicious food and friendly staff.
  • The historic center of Colle di Val d'Elsa is well worth the time to explore. And save a day or two for wonderful Siena!
  • Definitely you need a car - very rural setting.

May 2010 - It was more then I expected, 16th century feeling from beginning to end, felt so back in time. Just what I love.

The owner, along with her son and daughter in law, were so wonderful and helpful.

The apartment was left as original as possible, which blew me away. Clean, cozy, furnished with all you need for a great stay. Enjoyed each and every day.

July 2007 - Very charming interior decoration, maintaining the original style.

Very generous welcome - lots of style.

Very quiet place, sharing the swimming pool with only 2 other apartments. Excellent and clean swimming pool.

Lots of maps and brochures in the house - good idea for the ones who are less prepared...

Travel tips

  • The shortest route to Siena on the map is definitely the most beautiful, but also the one that gets you car sick! Take the longer road if you would like to get there fast.

June 2007 - We loved Casa Rutilia -- very rustic, great location for visiting local towns but also very quiet and peaceful.

Swimming pool is lovely. The estate is fantastic, you could imagine being back in time.

The owners were lovely, we arrived on a bank holiday Saturday and hence the supermarkets were closed for 2 days but the owners made sure we had sufficient supplies to get through until Monday. Cot and high-chair provided and if we needed anything they sorted it straight away.

It is not a luxury apartment and this is exactly what we wanted: the rustic style and charm of the accommodation was in abundance. Difficult to fault and I have already recommended the accommodation to friends.

June 2007 - The manager/owner Paola, her husband (and brother who manages the farm) were wonderful. They were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. There was a scrumptious home-made cake, milk, bread and breakfast goodies awaiting us upon our arrival.

The house was roomy, providing comfortable country living. The hosts were the friendliest we met on our whole five week trip.

Maps and information about the local area were provided in the house which was very handy and needed.

Travel tips

  • This is a great spot for families with children
  • our primary school aged kids loved the farm house cat that adopted us for the week, the farm animals and the space to run around/play in.
  • Read and follow the directions given VERY carefully, once you get off the autostrada, the first few turns come upon you very quickly.
  • Although the door of the office to the estate remains closed, the manager is actually there during the day. Just knock on the door. It took us a number of days to realise this.

October 2006 - The villa was beautiful and the owners were very helpful. It was very thoughtful of them to have supplies in the fridge and the table to make our first morning worry free.

We had a lovely wine tasting in their home on the first Sunday. Paola helped with finding directions to sights we wished to see and was able to make reservations for us at the Uffizi . They did everything possible to make us feel at home, right down to making a fire for us in the fireplace the first night and then after a long day of sightseeing we came home to a roaring fire.

The grounds were amazing and the buildings all had their own character. I would definitely go back

I would definitely use you again for my next trip. Your advice was helpful and your suggestions for what villas to stay in was bang on to your description. Thank you

Travel tips

  • Keep in mind that the villa is a distance from any shopping so try to come supplied with groceries for the first few days.
  • We did day trips from the villa and despite the fact everything seemed close it took longer to drive to areas since the roads are not very straight.

June 2006 - Casa Rutilia is a wonderful place to stay with a family.

My children became friends with the owners children and still talk about them. They did not speak a word of English, but managed to communicate and have alot of fun. Paula, Vittorio and Niccolo are wonderful people, who take great pride in their property. Paula was so helpful, friendly and eager to help us in any way.

The accomodation is excellent, and better than shown on the website. The pool was a wonderful bonus as the weather was very hot.

My only regret is that we did not book for 2 weeks and had to leave.

June 2006 - We did enjoy Casa Rutilia. Loved hearing the peacock and pea hen each day - morning and night.

Paola's [the owner] gardens are beautiful - lovely roses, very picturesque.

The welcome we received was unbelievable - some bread, meat, butter, eggs, coffee, sugar, matches, and a freshly-baked cake for us - and a cookie jar full of cookies - made us very happy. Paola was delightful. The most charming hostess we had our entire 3 week holiday in Italy.

Unfortunately, Casa Rutilia can not be booked at this time.

We would love to help you find a suitable alternative. Please be in touch for personal advice from our staff!
