Transportation in Italy: by plane, train, ferry or bus.Here are the links to the transportation sites that a traveler to Southern Italy might be interested in. We have selected the most relevant links to public transportation companies that operate buses, trains, ferries and airports. Whenever it was available we have linked to the English version of their web site. Many of this companies publish the current transportation schedule on their web site. Beware that the published schedules might not always be up-to-date: check to see whether there is a reference date for the schedule! Also, consider this if you are planning a trip that is far away in time: many transportation companies have a winter schedule and a summer schedule. The one that is published is usually the current schedule (be it winter or summer at the time you visit their site). We take great care to make sure that our links are up-to-date: should you find an outdated link please do let us know! AirportsIf you are flying into Rome, you might be interested in how to get from the Fiumicino or the Ciampino aiports to the Termini trainstatin in the center of Rome.
If you are flying into Naples and directed to the Sorrento or Amalfi Coast you have the option of boarding the Curreri bus to Sorrento (the schedule is on the Curreri web site, scroll down the page for the English version). The bus also stops in Meta di Sorrento, Piano di Sorrento and Sant'Agnello. The other option is to take the shuttle bus to the train station outside the arrivals terminal. TrainsTrains in Italy are operated by Trenitalia and by a few others smaller companies that only handle local transportation. On the Trenitalia web site you will be able to query the on-line train schedule as well as to buy tickets. Travelers coming to the Naples/Sorrento area will also be interested in the Circumvesuviana trains. The Circumvesuviana railways connect Naples with Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other villages of the area. The map of the railway network is available on Circumvesuviana web site. An interactive schedule is also available (unfortunately most of the Circumvesuviana web site is in Italian only). BusesThe villages in the Sorrento/Amalfi area are connected by the reliable bus service provided by SITA. On the SITA web site you will find the current schedule (tip: at first it might look confusing; use the "find on this page" function of your browser to locate the name of the villages that you are interested in reaching, and download the schedules for the buses that reach those villages). Once you are in the area, you will also be able to pick-up a pamphlet at the SITA ticket offices. Travelers to the Cilento area might be interested in checking out the CSTP bus schedule. CSTP offers service to the Santa Maria di Castellabate area, with buses departing from Salerno, Agropoli and stopping in many coastal and in land villages. The list might look confusing at first: you might want to look at lines #34, 90, 92, 93 and 99. Ferries and HydrofoilsFerries and hydrofoils are operated by several companies. Here are the links to their official web sites, where you will be able to find the (hopefully) up-to-date schedules. Unfortunately the web sites are not always in English! Cooperativa Sant'Andrea provides a very comprehensive ferry service all along the Amalfi Coast. If there are at least 25 people in your group you can even rent your own ferry. Metro del Mare: "Sea Metro", offers public transportation services by sea from Naples to Capri, the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts, the Cilento coast and back. Other ferry and hydrofoils companies: Alilauro, Caremar, L.M.P., L.N.G..
