The three stacks of CapriThe most popular Italian stacks, known as Faraglioni, located off the Island of Capri in the Bay of Naples, create one of the most fascinating and captivating landscapes of the world. The name Faraglioni probably comes from the Greek "pharos", meaning lighthouse: in ancient times, these types of rises located nearby the coast were indeed used as lighthouses, over-topped by signalling fires, lighted all over the night, in order to guide the navigation. Greek and Roman sailors as soon as they could, used to sail by sight from the coasts, because of the small ships, the pirates and to better get their bearings, too. This habit was extremely dangerous, in fact crashing and running aground as well as getting wrecked by the stacks was not rare at all! That was the reason why they had to signal every single rock inshore. These gorgeous rocks are particularly famous because of a rare species of lizard: the "lacerta muralis coerulea" or simply "blue lizard", characterized by a special blue colouration all along the body, living only in the area of Capri. The first Faraglione, named Stella, is 109 metres high and is practically attached to the coast. The most external one is called Scopolo, 104 metres high, while the middle stack or "Faraglione di Mezzo" is 81 metres high and crossed, from a side to the other, by a natural gallery, 60 metres long. A fourth stack is located in front of Tragara's port and is named "il Monacone", deriving from the monk seal that used to live there until the last century.
