One of the most impressive castles in Umbria dominates the hill town of Assisi. While the lower part of town is focused on the magnificent Basilica of St Francis, the upper ancient part of the city is overlooked by the distinctive stronghold that has guarded Assisi since the 1100s. It was built in a highly strategic spot - which is also highly picturesque with incredible views of the Umbrian countryside that sweeps across hills, valleys, mountains and plains, making a visit to this castle a truly rewarding visual experience.

There has been a fortress here since the 1100s but it was in the 1300s the castle become a significant presence of military importance, when Assisi was under the Papal States and Cardinal Albornoz enhanced it as a true stronghold. There are multiple wall systems, an interior courtyard, an observation post on a point with a walkway that is cradled on top of the wall. Tunnels, staircases, secret passages, and a dungeon will keep kids entertained and demonstrate the complexity of medieval defensive systems to adults.

The architectural features are a geometrical collection built in different eras: a square watch tower, a polygonal tower, a circular bastion, for example. Climb the towers, walk the passageways and enjoy the stellar views from the island-like look-out point. See how the incredibly low protective wall staggers down the hillside, where it once also encircled the city? Imagine the footsteps and fervor that once echoed through the stone walls of this well-kept castle.
