In the striped hills outside Monticello d'Alba, the vines produce excellent wines, and Nota is a good place to start. The winery started in 1952 and is now on the third generation, always improving and expanding the production. The wines are classic local varietals - Nebbiolo (and Barolo), Barbera, Dolcetto for reds, and Arneis, Roero-Arneis, and Favorita for whites. They have a unique feature, too - the "Crutin Nicolai" - crutin being the dialect word for cantina, or wine cellar. This one is something special, a five-room chamber carved out of the tufo stone for aging and storing wine. Really beautiful to behold!
