The unusual hills of the Valle d'Itria are marked by limestone cavities and surprises, like the Parco Rupestre of the Lama D'Antico near Fasano. The historic and ancient village occupied the shallow canyon, where primitive cave homes date back to the 16th century BC, and where surprisingly beautiful churches were carved into the rock, called "rupestre", complete with vaults, arches and frescoes.

The complex is set in the lovely natural landscape of the Mediterranean macchia -the natural scrub plants that grow around the region. The tour takes you through the complex, which is a fascinating glimpse into the past in itself; but there are often special exhibitions of old artisan crafts and trades to add to the experience. In summer, they offer events and performances, as well.
