The city of Pisa blazes luminously with 140,000 candles every June 16 to celebrate their patron saint, San Ranieri. The flickering flames illuminate the buildings in romantic fashion, accompanied by food stands, an artisan market, music and entertainment.

Candles in glass containers are placed into "biancheria" - frames that are constructed for the purpose, and designed into decorative displays. The outline windows, adorn doorways, and make swirls or other patterns. The effect is delightful, and it is the most special night of the Pisan calendar. There is voting for the best displays, and candles light up the stands, as well.

The street festival is filled with fun, food, and dancing, all along the Lungarno (the streets along the Arno River) and finishes off with fireworks. It's a great time to visit Pisa!
