Travel tips and advice for Villa Trotta

Alexandra Le Bek, Harrogate, United Kingdom

  • Everything you need is in Perdifumo - bakery, butcher, grocery, patisserie, post office and even a local doctor (my son came down with tonsillitis and the doctor actually came to the house in the evening to see him - not the UK!).
  • Excellent village pizzeria but only open at weekends in April.

  • Market day in Santa Maria di Castellabate is Saturday, and Agropoli is Thursday. Look up Barbara at La Ruota Pasticceria in Perdifumo. She is an English speaking peach, and makes an awesome Rum Baba.
  • The Villa supports two of the ubiquitous small green lizards that populate much of the sun-drenched continent. I have attempted to identify their species, but have come away confused by the sheer number of variants. They seemed quite happy to be called "Wall Dragons". We found Dick and Liz to be very entertaining, always curious, invariably very aware and wary. I don't know what they do to survive, but they seem to spend an indecent amount of time relaxing in the sunshine of the patio railings.
  • Memorable late night returns from the pizzeria after a couple of refreshments are a short hike along a dark country road. Bring your flashlight!

  • The cakes in La Ruota are highly recommended and Barbara or her son can help with translation if you are stuck. The Pizzeria is very nice and very reasonable but is only open at the weekend apart from during the high season (starts 15th June).

  • The beach at Santa Maria is WONDERFUL!!! Clear, clean water, loungers to rent, access to toilet and easy walking distance to shops and restaurants.
  • We loved Laureana - there is an incredible restaurant/antiques shop/hotel run by Memo and Teresa that is fantastic!!! They will seat you at an antique table and serve a multiple-course, from scratch meal with homemade liqueurs for a very reasonable price and delightful hospitality.
  • We liked driving from one mountain village to the next discovering hidden away treasures like monasteries and castles.
  • Capri was worth every bit of effort to get to. Take the hydrofoil ferry from Sorrento and make sure to take the 2-hour boat trip around the island.

  • Beware that the house is built to deal with very hot summers. Being that we were there at the beginning of May, we expected it to be cold, at night especially... and we did have to use the electric fires to try to keep warm. It was also challenging trying to get our clothes dry.
