Travel tips and advice for Villa Trotta

Patrice Schimick, Downers Grove, IL, United States

June 4, 2011

  • Get the GPS on the rental car, you will need it to find the villa and anywhere that you want to go. Unless you research everything (including restaurants and sights) ahead of time, bring a laptop... it was most helpful to read up on where we wanted to go and how to get there.
  • The caretaker comes after a week to change the sheets and towels, she had tried to explain that when we first got there, but it was lost on me, so expect a brief visit for that if you're there longer than a week.
  • Learn some basic Italian before you go [or bring a phrasebook], most of the people around the villa and towns don't speak English, luckily our daughter speaks Spanish and that helped, a lot of the words are similar.

  • Get a good Italian GPS program. We used Co-Pilot Italy for iPhone, I think Tom Tom makes one too. Absolutely vital, we would never have found anything, especially the house, without it.
  • In late April 2011 the weather during the day was perfect -- in the high 60s and 70s -- but the nights in a stone villa were very cold, even with the space heaters and a fireplace. Bring ski underwear and fleece and bundle up at night.
  • We loved the fireplace, and there was plenty of wood store underneath the terrace. It was so cold at night we went through quite a bit of it, and paid Ester 20 Euro, but well worth it.
  • The village of Perdifumo is lovely, but small, with just the basics food-wise and everything closes for much of the afternoon [from 1 pm until 4.30 or 5 pm]. Do a big grocery shop in Agropoli before you get to the Villa on the first night (get paper products and food, etc.) In the village, the cafe and patisserie owners speak German and English, which we found helpful.
  • We loved Paestum, the ruins and the farms that make bufala mozzarella are fun to visit. Also the seaside town of Santa Maria di Castellabate was lovely for its beach and nice little shopping area.
  • Villa Trotta had good, strong wi-fi in several downstairs rooms. We used the dining room for an office for the laptops because there were so many great eating areas outside and in the kitchen. There is no phone, so get Skype or an European cellphone calling plan, before you go. The driving up and down the mountain was tough the first few days, though we grew used to it. Having GPS was absolutely crucial, and we never tried to drive at night -- I bet it would be scary. Speaking of scary, do NOT drive in the city of Naples if you can avoid it (highway to and from the airport is OK) I am a seasoned Boston driver, and 30 minutes driving in downtown Naples had me begging for mercy.

  • Velia ruins a must visit as well as Paestum.

  • We love the location and the drive getting to Villa Trotta - our GPS (highly recommended) worked perfectly even in the small village of Perdifumo.
  • We loved Paestum the most - much better than Pompeii in our opinion.
  • We enjoyed all of the towns along the coast - Santa Maria, Agropoli, San Marco, etc. Just find a pizza restaurant (any one will do - they are all very good) and sit and enjoy the sights, weather, and people.

  • Gather information about the National Park including walking routes etc. By the time we found the tourist office, the weather had deteriorated and we did not get a chance to walk.
